Winning Hearts And Minds

They say that a leader must “win the hearts and minds” of their team.

I think winning their hearts will do the trick. If you’ve got their heart, the mind will follow.

So what’s the best way to win their hearts? One way is to speak to them FROM the heart.

Words spoken from the heart land IN the heart.

Words spoken from the head land IN the head.

Too often, leaders try to inspire their teams through intellect and calculated presentations and bulleted talk tracks.

But words spoken from the head will never land in the heart.

Throw away the bullet points.

Tell them what you REALLY care about.

Show them who you REALLY are.

Go off script.

Then and only then will you have any chance at all of winning the hearts, and eventually the minds, of your team.
